Winter Solstice, The Longest Night

This year, December 21, our Winter Solstice event is performed by practicing Wiccans.

Wicca not only draws upon natures cycles, especially that of winter in this event, but also a diverse set of ancient pagan and hermetic motifs for its theological structure and ritual practices. Wiccan celebrations encompass both the cycles of the Moon, known as Esbats and commonly associated with the Goddess (female deity), and the cycles of the Sun, seasonally based festivals known as Sabbats and commonly associated with the Horned God (male deity) Winter Solstice. Each year he dies and is reborn again at Yule (the Winter Solstice).

Wicca often involves the ritual practice of magick - the kind of magick that comes with this Winter Solstice event; the darkest hour before the dawn. Transitioning into a new year, a new beginning.

An esbat is a coven meeting at a time other than one of the Sabbats within Wicca and other Wiccan-influenced forms of contemporary Paganism. Esbats are an opportunity for healing work, psychic training utilizing tools of the trade such as tarot, esoteric methods and techniques. An esbat is commonly understood to be a ritual observance on the night of a full moon. Covens are autonomous and are generally headed by a High Priest and a High Priestess working in partnership, being a couple who have each been through their first, second, and third degrees of initiation. Occasionally the leaders of a coven are only second-degree initiates, in which case they come under the rule of the parent coven.
