A Danish a ”Vølve,” is what we in English would call a Seeress. You could compare it to someone who practices shamanism or witchcraft. So, a Völva is a Nordic version of a shaman or witch, that practiced magick. In Old Norse, Seidr , was a type of magick which was practiced in Norse society during the late Scandinavian Iron Age.

The practice of Seidr is believed to be a form of magick which is related to both the telling and the shaping of the future.

Viking women called Volva, which means “wand-wed” or “staff-carrier” in Old Norse was an essential attribute of the Volva, who were considered to be seeresses, shamans and practitioners of Seidr magick.

Athena carries the blood of the Volva. She is a great seeress of mythical proportions.
